Design Manifesto

Brief:

This introductory project requires you to construct, present and 'exhibit' your design Manifesto based on your ideological beliefs, philosophy and design practice.

Approach & Process:

Understanding "What Manifesto means"? -

After going through the presentations given by our subject leaders and tutors, I figured my understanding for Manifesto is to state your own beliefs and own it in front of the whole world, whether it is positive or negative. Your Manifesto can be political, social or artistic, religious (creeds) or sometimes revolutionary. After presenting your Manifesto, if someone or collectively people undersigns/subscribes to your beliefs, that means your Manifesto has a practical impact and has a call to action.

Listing out my own beliefs -

Before brainstorming about my design manifesto, I decided to write down all my thoughts without any limitations and consider doing it beyond the classroom project. I listed down the below-mentioned beliefs in an initial stage of my Manifesto that I usually practice for my own life. After that, I analysed my thoughts into different categories. I could see the natural connection between four significant points (point no. 4, 8, 11 & 12), which helped generate my Design Manifesto for a brand - "Aces Of A Brand".

The initial stage of my Manifesto -

Brainstorming of my own different beliefs!

  1. I firmly believe that there should be equality between men and women on personal and professional platforms. Society should eradicate gender-biased notions, and that is why many brands are moving towards developing neutral products/concepts for the user.

  2. I believe that if you hold a belief/trust in God, then we should ask for the path of strength, peace and happiness instead of materialistic demands and negativity. It isn't easy, but we should expect an excellent harmless fortune for us and everyone.

  3. It is very crucial to be self-reliant/independent.

  4. Like human intuition powers, every brand has its own strong intuition, and people working for that particular brand should hear it and help the brand flourish. (Empowering brands)

  5. Design practices should be developed on authenticity and originality.

  6. I believe that money spent on unnecessary things and the calories reduced to be fit should be counted.

  7. People should be inspired by rich experiences and not just rich bank balances.

  8. The right amount of communication is the key to unlocking the impossible doors. (Communication)

  9. I believe that every person should play any sport they get interested in, as they hold a lot of power to teach you about failure, success, team playing, dedication, developing a solid mindset, healthy/fit lifestyle, and understanding different human strategies. (Promoting Sports - Encouraging people to play sports) What is my belief in an equestrian life?

  10. There is a thin line between art and design.

  11. I believe in supporting and embracing multitaskers/multipotentialite, they might be excellent in everything, but they have the energy to see things from different perspectives. (Brands should hire multi-passionate people).

  12. The world is not just for humans! (Sustainable thinking)

  13. Consider criticism as your friend

Research -

Merriam-Webster's defines a Manifesto as "a written statement that describes the policies, goals, and opinions of a person or group." In art, a manifesto is a public declaration of an artist or group of artists intentions or views in terms of the work they create.

To understand the exact meaning of Manifesto - A manifesto is a published declaration of the intentions, motives, or views of the issuer, be it an individual, group, political party or government. A manifesto usually accepts a previously published opinion or public consensus or promotes a new idea with prescriptive notions for carrying out changes the author believes should be made.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manifesto

Outcome of my Design Manifesto: ACES OF A BRAND

Intuition -

One of the most important things a brand can empower itself is following its gut feelings. Sometimes, more than the vision and mission, a brand and its physiological thinking can make all the difference. The growth of the brand should be put ahead of one's thoughts and beliefs, and one should neglect all the rules (sometimes) and go along with what their intuition says. The brand's intuition power can do wonders and prove to be significantly impactful. Being a Brand designer/strategist/manager, one should always listen to the intuition power of a brand.

Communication -

The correct amount of communication can avoid miscommunication if you choose not to address the problems. A valuable communication strategy is essential for a brand's growth and is the key to unlocking impossible doors of success. A correct amount of communication and rightly placed communication strategy can leverage the brand's message to the consumer.

Multi-Potentiality -

Many times, brands hire people who specialise in their fields. However, I think that giving people who can multitask a try is something brands should consider. The multi-potentiality in people can come through with their ideas and the kind of work they do since they have the knowledge to scrutinise things from various perspectives. Contemporary brands should hire multi-passionate people.

Sustainability -

Another thing to give thought to can be the rise in sustainability in today's world and how we, as humans, can sometimes neglect the world and its incredibility. There is no doubt about that, giving more limelight to the circular economy approach in the future. Our world is not just for humans, and going ahead, companies should surely keep this in mind.

Why "Aces Of A Brand" as the title of my design manifesto?

As we know that ace is ranked as the highest card in its suit in most card games, my concept is that every brand should follow the excellent factors stated in my design manifesto to empower its existence. Hence, those four primary factors must be practised, considering them as the "Aces of a brand".

Reflective Analysis & Learnings:

  1. After writing my design manifesto and going through some references, I understood that your beliefs play a crucial role in "how you will impact the industry while working professionally" because beliefs can generate strong, successful results if one practices his/her own beliefs ethically.

  2. This classroom project of generating your design manifesto helped me analyse where I stand in my own life and how it can benefit my work. It is necessary to have efficient and positive beliefs about specific subjects to develop yourself.

  3. I understood that a good design manifesto should have a vision statement, a call to action, points that articulate the group claims, goals, defining principles, and background or history.

  4. Every design/strategy starts with a single thought in a creator's mind. That is why it is necessary to have filled up your mind with edge-cutting innovative beliefs to manifest the ideas for a better impact.

  5. In our class, everyone's Manifesto was very creative and reflected an individual's personality. It made me think that if everyone in the world starts manifesting positivity and smart moves, the world will be a better place, not just for humans but for every living thing.

  6. As this Manifesto was to be 'exhibited' - we all came up with different visual aids to support our manifestos like digital posters, posters with augmented reality, material explorations, photography, etc. I created a conceptual A2 digital poster defining my design manifesto and gave a call to action to undersign my Manifesto if you play these same cards.

  7. This project allowed us to be free and believe in our thoughts without fearing what's right and what's wrong. We all tried our best to explore this freedom to make the most out of our design manifesto.
