Podcast - Five Hoppers

Brief:

The Podcast brief required us to work alongside our peers to create, name, format and deliver branded content for a published podcast, themes, look, identity and target will be discussed and agreed within the unit. This brief contributes to EDIB7012 Professional Practice & Final Project with our Podcast and written evaluations (our input and analytical conclusions are the projectʼs assessed element). Audio Presentation - The work will be published through a podcast service as audio content.

Approach and Process:

Firstly, looking at our past example of working on the First Cut assignment, we all successfully contributed to the work with our strengths in various aspects. Finally, we negotiated with each other and formed a group of the five people same as last time: Tirth Desai, Marine Tetedoie, Stephen Huang, Thomas Krska and myself, Kanisha Jhaveri(Five Hoppers)

So, hop on with us for the development of our podcast!

We started to manage this project by having a concrete work timeline at each stage. After the formation of the group and stating up a timeline, a few questions come up:

How are we looking to position this podcast as a brand?

What type of content should we communicate with our audience?

What kind of podcast are we exploring in our day-to-day lives as individuals?

To answer all these questions, we started brainstorming the content. In follow up, we came up with a few ideas that indirectly related to our final project in the international scenario, engaging with a broader audience/consumer. After presenting our initial thoughts to our tutors, we worked on the feedback and moved towards work division.

Kanisha and Tirth: Competitive analysis research and brand strategy building.

Marine: Mood board for brand identity and its development.

Stephen: Mood board and presentation curation.

Thomas: Mood board and basic editing of the recordings.

Research and Strategy Building:

1) Competitive Analysis -

Detailed competitive analysis is documented in the presentation. Here, I have listed the names and Spotify links. Other social platforms were used to study and analyse the competitors. Competing brands were researched based on two major points - podcasts created by the students and their content.

2) Overview of Strategy Development -

This podcast is branded as "Five Hoppers", as the podcast hosts come from different countries like India, France, the Czech Republic and Taiwan. Hopping on various subjects with us will let the listeners evolve to have a better viewpoint. We strategised our podcast where the collective of five international students in the UK are sharing their authentic experiences by hopping on different subjects through a creative and innovative conversation about their daily life in the global market. The consumer and the brands can make the most out of this conversation conducted by five hoppers to understand the consumer's everyday life in various industry segments. A detailed strategy is explained in the presentation.

Following up with the strategy building, brand identity creation came into action, starting with group discussion to have everyone aligned with the strategy in detail, leading towards mood board building and then final identity creation. Brand identity is very well designed, keeping in mind the tonality and messaging of the podcast as a brand.

3) Final Content and Its Research -

We finalised our topics and content after building up the strategy. The content was developed aligning with our strategy with the brief research for each episode's topic. Five Hoppers: Following are the content of the first series.

  • Episode 1: Stephen Huang (Taiwan) - Experiences after coming to the UK.

  • Episode 2: Tirth Desai (India) - Living in the bubble of Metaverse.

  • Episode 3: Thomas Krska (Czech republic) - Entertainment industry.

  • Episode 4: Marine Tetedoie (France) - Greenwashing.

  • Episode 5: Kanisha Jhaveri (India) - Developing life skills through sports.

Before recording each episode, we researched and discussed each other's questions while keeping them authentic. My take and input for each episode can be witnessed in the audio recording for the podcast. For instance, for the topic of Metaverse, i.e. Tirth was the host of that episode, he provided the question to me, and for that, I looked up the following article to enhance my knowledge. https://www.sportbusiness.com/2021/11/what-does-the-metaverse-mean-for-sport/

4) My Topic: Developing life skills through sports -

After carefully examining the strategy, relevance to my final project and from my personal experience. I decided to move forward with this topic because, with the support of a podcast, I can conduct one form of research for my FP by getting the knowledge and understanding from my international team members(guest).

I always want to promote the importance of sports in one's development in life by sharing my own knowledge, experience, and research. I looked up to articles in relation to my topic:

5) Rehearsal and Final Recording -

Before each recording, we rehearsed according to our scripts with the whole group. We had to conduct 2-3 days of recording to have a qualitative outcome. Soon after our final recordings, we edited a few of the glitches and made the final version which still has much scope for improvements before the final launch.

All the final recordings can be accessed through this link:

Reflective Analysis & Learnings:

  1. I found this form of assignment critically vital because I analysed how a brand can engage with its consumers through podcast audio content, bypassing information very quickly.

  2. Listeners can explore topics by listening to podcasts without having to read or watch videos, and this provides a competitive advantage to each brand/organisation.

  3. Podcasting is the perfect tool for raising awareness and influencing social change. People can stay engaged with them for long periods, so we were able to get personal and go in-depth without alienating them.

  4. We used podcasts as a medium to bring international people and experiences together. Any global consumer can try and relate to our first series.

  5. Technical factors like operating a sound studio, maintaining sound quality and editing were considered to record the podcast effectively. I learned about other possible podcast recording formats like live-movable podcast audio recording without any proper setup through competitor research. We might explore other formats for future series.

  6. The primary thing I observed through research is that podcasts have low competition. Hundreds to thousands of people may listen to just a few podcasts that discuss topics relevant to your business. Due to the low competition, it is much easier to get listeners to gain recognition with your podcast.

  7. Through podcast audio content, many of us were able to come out of our shells and discuss the concept very confidently.

  8. It is necessary to stay up-to-date with new forms of technology to cultivate your content. The podcast is one of those forms with flexibility in format to adapt to new creativity and innovation.

  9. Brands and consumers can use this platform to engage and research for their benefits and development.
