First Cut

If I would summarise this task/assignment in one sentence, that would be "A creative educational field trip with your classmates that happened, unlike some trips which we keep on planning and never happens." hahaha…

Brief:

You are required to record and present your group impressions of a London Event visit (researched and negotiated before attendance. Design and design-related events can be found in abundance in London and surrounding areas.

After careful negotiation, discussion and agreed consensus, you will edit and assemble a 10-minute presentation. Groups should consist of three or more.

The final result could be a /photographic/illustrated/film/audio/visual/drawn/designed presentation that records the 'First Cut' on your collective ideas.

Research:

Research for this event was not only limited to workbook or classroom method, it was also researching about making your group with certain people, who have something better and unique in them which you don't have and can learn from them.

My group members were: Tirth, Marine, Tomas, and Stephen.

Possible Events -

Here are the events I researched for our group project. I shared all these events after once understanding the brief's requirements to my group members to collect their opinions and suggestions.

  1. Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience, Commercial 106

  2. The wonder of nature - National History Museum

  3. Alice In Wonderland, V&A Museum - Until 31st December https://www.instagram.com/p/CPGVj7dH9oL/

  4. Museum of Brands https://museumofbrands.com/?_ga=2.24090682.1218814558.1636069447-145271381.1636069447

  5. The Design Museum https://designmuseum.org

  6. London Build Expo https://www.srm.com/events/london-build-expo-17th-18th-november-2021/

Why Alice: Curiouser and Curiouser?

Based on certain factors, we all came to a conclusion to visit and study Alice's exhibition: Curiouser and Curiouser at Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

  1. The classic story that we all have heard before about Alice's imagination in her Wonderland.

  2. Creative exhibition which was curated with the Virtual Reality and Innovative technological methods.

  3. The exhibition was held at the V&A Museum, one of the world's leading art and design museums.

  4. Comparatively, the Student Art pass offered by Art Fund gave us a significant discount on visiting this event, which made Alice our final choice. Being budding brand managers, we also have to look after the financial budgets of the project. https://www.studentartpass.org

Watching Movie -

Before visiting an exhibition to gain the hold of Alice's life we all decided that it is necessary to rewatch the very recent film of Alice in Wonderland (2010) which was adapted from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Through the Looking-Glass, directed by Tim Burton and story by Lewis Carroll. We all watched it together and analysed the story, screenplay, character development, overall theme, and cinematography.

Observational research at the exhibition -

  1. It was magical and exactly gave us the feel of being in Alice's Wonderland.

  2. This was V&A's landmark exhibition which celebrated one of the most iconic, imaginative and inspiring stories of all time. Offering an immersive and mind-bending journey down the rabbit hole, this fantastical exhibition explored Alice in Wonderland's origins, adaptations and reinventions over 158 years.

  3. There are over 300 objects spanning film, performance, fashion, art, music and photography; the V&A was the first museum to fully explore the cultural impact of Alice and her ongoing inspiration for leading creatives, from Salvador Dalí and The Beatles to Little Simz and Thom Browne.

  4. Alice: Curiouser and Curiouser took children and adults on a journey through the enchanting and extraordinary world of Wonderland through Alice's eyes, featuring theatrical sets, large-scale digital projections, and immersive environments. They were designed by award-winning designer Tom Piper – best known for his stage designs for the Royal Shakespeare Company and the V&A and his Tower of London poppies installation – the exhibition rewarded 'curiouser and curiouser' visitors with secret doors and interactive displays.

  5. Highlights include Lewis Carroll's original manuscript, illustrations by John Tenniel, Ralph Steadman and Disney, stage costumes, fashion from Iris van Herpen and photography from Tim Walker and Annie Leibovitz.

  6. This exhibition took us on the path of curiosity, just like Alice. We had to follow the rabbit throughout the journey and keep folding the paper provided to us, leading towards the end of the exhibition.

  7. Experience of VR technology was very much worthy. This new VR experience resulted from an innovative partnership between the V&A and HTC Vive Arts, produced by immersive games studio PRELOADED and featuring original artworks by Icelandic illustrator Kristjana S Williams. I followed Kristjana Williams on Instagram because of her mind-blowing artwork, and I got to know about this exhibition.

Approach & Process:

Post visit -

After visiting an exhibition, it was necessary to conduct the brainstorming session to share our thoughts about the whole experience. We started planning and strategising on how to present with a practical impact.

Establishment of "Five Hoppers" -

Our primary ideation of presenting the whole event took the path of us being the mediators as "Five Hoppers" brand, which will promote this exhibition considering 'Curiosity' as our main element of the brand. From conceptualising the brand name to diving into different kinds of work roles between us helped execute our project with the expected outcomes.

Skeleton of the project -

We took the approach of promoting this event through different platforms after building the brand strategy. Every platform were used according to its purpose, and the work was divided equally among all the group members.

Kanisha - Building the outlined brand strategy of "Five Hoppers" to communicate about this event to the core target audience of this exhibition.

Marine - Content creation for TikTok.

Tirth - Executing the Instagram structure.

Tomas - Developing detailed video which can be published on Youtube.

Stephen - Compiling the whole work done by the team in the form of an effective presentation.

After all the editing and creation of the content, we inter looked at each other's work as a team to check the possibilities of improvisation. Also, it was necessary to check that the overall content has brand consistency on all the platforms following up the communication strategy is rightly placed according to the brand messaging and positioning. Finally, we were set to publish our brand "Five Hoppers" to the world to make awareness about this exhibition, taking 'Curiosity' as our central intuition.

The whole brand strategy is well documented in the submitted presentation, with all the links to different social media platforms as our deliverables.

Reflective Analysis & Learnings:

  1. It is very convenient to work with people in your home town with the same nationality. However, it is a challenge and very crucial to work with people from different places as they hold major unique perspectives. Through this project, I learned how to work with international people by maintaining positivity and enthusiasm effectively.

  2. Negotiation, Teamwork and networking skills are for sure developed after working on this project. The ideation process of the project is essential but making an effective team is also very important. I chose to be a part of this team because I knew that every one of us are dedicated and passionate people to work with.

  3. Somehow, I analysed that everyone of us were playing the role of a brand manager in their unique ways, and we allowed each other to lead wherever needed. I enjoyed and understood the importance of Brand management considering several aspects.

  4. Before visiting the event, we divided our documentation work into different formats considering content creation for various platforms (Vertical, landscape, photography, etc.) Our cohort and tutors appreciated this at the time of the presentation.

  5. According to the brand tone and voice, the audio and visuals compiled by Marine and Tomas are outstanding, which gave justice to the overall brand strategy.

  6. We were appreciated for very well planning, execution and our professional management, which gave meaning and purpose to the event. Timeline of completing the project was maintained with efficiency.

  7. Some feedback was helpful for our improvisation, and we will make sure to keep that in our mind for our learnings.
